Sharing Large Files

Sharing Large Files after the Office 365 Migration

Because Office 365 has a smaller limit on email attachments, it will no longer be possible to send a message larger than 25 MB to a colleague. In lieu of email, there are several other options of which staff and faculty can take advantage.

Campus Distributed File Share (DFS)

You can share files by navigating to a mutually-shared network location, such as a department folder. The easiest way to do this is to create a shortcut on your desktop to the shared location:

  1. Open any folder to bring up a file explorer window
  2. Type "\\campus\dfs\Departments" into the address bar and press [ENTER], as below:
    DFS File Explorer

  3. Locate your department's folder and right-click on it. Choose "Send To -> Desktop (create shortcut)".

When you want to share a file, drag the file into the department folder shortcut. To see other files people have shared, open the shortcut and browse as normal.

Note: Be careful about deleting files in the shared space, as they will also be removed for other users. When in doubt, it is best to check prior to deleting files on the DFS.

MyBC/SharePoint (up to 50 MB)

You can share files using department sites in MyBC. Log in as normal, click the "Departments" link at the top, and choose your department from the list. From your department site, you can create asset libraries and add your files to them.

Microsoft OneDrive

Although IT Support Services is still testing this feature and is not currently able to support it, Microsoft OneDrive is available to staff and faculty who have been migrated to Office 365. As we build documentation specific to Butte College, please temporarily refer to Microsoft's support documentation, available at the link below:
